Mining and Pastoral MLC Wendy Duncan has welcomed the announcement that $195,000 of State Government funding will be used to help support the successful WA Men’s Shed Association (WAMSA).

Government funds of $65,000 a year for three years will help finance the operations of new and existing WAMSA facilities and services across the State.
“The Men’s Sheds are great places that encourage people from all walks of life to learn new skills. They also encourage friendships and break down social isolation – a real risk to wellbeing, especially as we age,” said Ms Duncan.
She said that in taking part in Men’s Shed activities, men in particular were also accessing a network which provided them with advice and support with regard to their health and wellbeing.
“It is amazing that the Men’s Shed Association was only officially formed in 2007 and there are already 55 members around the state. It is a real testament to the need and the role they are fulfilling so well.”
Ms Duncan said that at the Seniors Expo on the weekend she had the opportunity to catch up with some members of Esperance’s Harbour Road Men’s Shed. The group recently was successful in securing a grant of $15,000 from the Royalties for Regions Regional Grants Scheme to help install solar panels.
“The Esperance Men’s Shed is going from strength to strength. It is now providing local high school students with training and access to advice and equipment. Shed members tell me the demand for “shed time” is so great that they will soon be in need of more room and expanded facilities.”
“The additional funding will be one avenue to source the funds to expand and meet the demand placed on it as a result of its success.”
