A commemorative sunset service for the lost sailors of HMAS Sydney II will be hosted tomorrow at Geraldton’s Mount Scott memorial precinct.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the HMAS Sydney II 70th Anniversary Commemorative Service would honour the crew of the ill-fated vessel that sank during a World War II battle.

“About 2,000 visitors are expected for this moving ceremony, paying tribute to the 645 Australian sailors who disappeared off our State’s coast in 1941,” Dr Hames said.

“In addition, the service will unveil the significant fifth element of the memorial, the Pool of Remembrance, which indicates the spot where the HMAS lies together with the longitude and latitude coordinates.”

The State Government is supporting this event through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Scheme, which is jointly funded by Royalties for Regions.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said he was pleased to see Royalties for Regions funding supporting events that recognised the history and uniqueness of regional communities.

“This service will commemorate the anniversary of those who were lost to war in the terrible naval disaster off Geraldton’s coast 70 years ago,” Mr Grylls said.

“It is important we take the time to mark the events that have contributed to the rich history of our regions and contributed to shaping our State into what it is today.”
