Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies has congratulated the Shire of West Arthur on being selected as the state winner of the 2011 Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities award.

Other Agricultural Region towns – Northampton and Quairading – were named regional winners.

Ms Davies said the results recognised the wonderful work of volunteers in preparing their towns for the awards.

“It’s a great example of what can be achieved when communities work together,” Ms Davies said.

“Awards such as these are not only a great accolade, they deliver flow-on benefits including increased tourism and marketing opportunities and a general feeling of pride in the community,” Ms Davies said.

The West Arthur community was recognised for its excellence in improving and maintaining the Shire’s appearance and working towards environmental sustainability.

West Arthur has a proud record of success in the Tidy Towns awards, previously winning the categories of General Appearance, Natural Heritage; Conservation; Recycling and Waste Management; Enhancing Cultural Identity; and Water Conservation.

“As member for Agricultural Region I am always impressed with the manner in which our regional towns are presented and maintained,” Ms Davies said.

The Governor of Western Australia and Keep Australia Beautiful WA patron, His Excellency Mr Malcolm McCusker AO CVO QC presented the West Arthur Tidy Towns team with the award in Fremantle on Friday.

According to Keep Australian Beautiful, who manages the Australian Tidy Towns awards, more than 1000 communities and 90,000 volunteers engage in the Tidy Towns competition each year.
These projects contribute more than $100 million in volunteer labour.
