Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies joined a selection of Year 10 students from Great Southern schools for a workshop on ethical decision-making on Monday this week.
As part of the Great Southern School Youth Forum, Ms Davies shared her experience as a Member of Parliament and the role she plays in making decisions in the State Parliament.
The forum was held in Albany, and included students from across the Great Southern, including Katanning, Denmark and Albany.
“It was a great opportunity to meet with these young women and discuss the importance of ethical decision making and how it applies to everyday life,” Ms Davies said.
“Equipping young people with the confidence to take on leadership roles is an essential part of growing strong and vibrant communities.
“The young women were given a number of different scenarios throughout the day and asked to deliver recommendations on how to resolve the issue using an ethical decision making framework.”
She said the students tackled contentious issues like foreign investment in prime agricultural land, how a regional town could accommodate an influx in refugees, and whether to approve a new industry in a rural town that would require significant water use.
“The solutions and recommendations put forward after considering the scenarios were well thought through – our future is in good hands!” she said.
Ms Davies congratulated the Great Southern Youth Forum on providing young people with the opportunity to build their leadership skills and to understand the role they can play in their region’s future.
