Minimum security prisoners from Bunbury Regional Prison will join the community effort to help victims of last week’s bushfires near Margaret River.
Two six-man teams of supervised prisoners have been assigned to help clean up the fire zone.
The prisoners will clear burnt and fallen trees from roadsides and fence lines and carry out environmental protection and rehabilitation work.
The Department of Corrective Services has offered to make the prisoner clean-up teams available for up to four weeks.
The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River has welcomed the offer.
Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman said he strongly supported the use of prisoners in the bushfire recovery operation.
“Community work programs are a tangible way for prisoners to repay the community, and none could be more worthy than helping the victims of this terrible bushfire disaster,” Mr Redman said.
Minimum security prisoners were also involved in clean-up operations following recent bushfire disasters at Lake Clifton, the Perth hills and Toodyay.
