Thousands of Goldfields locals and visitors will celebrate the region’s rich mining heritage at this week’s 12th annual Saint Barbara’s Festival.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the event would commemorate lives lost in the industry at the miner’s memorial followed by a parade of more than 50 floats along Hannan Street.

“The mining industry is an integral part of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s past and future, and this popular festival brings people to the region and offers a great opportunity for businesses and the community to come together,” Dr Hames said.

“Regional events are important as they provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits to the community, as well as increase the region’s profile through media exposure.”

The State Government is supporting the festival through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Scheme (RES), which will provide $3million of funding to smaller and developing events in regional Western Australia in the next four years.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said Royalties for Regions had provided a $40million boost over four years to regional events, including $1.8million towards the RES.

“Royalties for Regions funding for regional events like the Saint Barbara’s Festival provide the opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate what makes them unique,” Mr Grylls said.

“The Goldfields community has a lot to celebrate, with a rich mining heritage, an ongoing valuable contribution to the State’s economy and vibrant thriving towns with an attractive lifestyle.”
