Local member for Wagin Terry Waldron encourages young students to open a book, magazine or newspaper and settle in for an imaginary trip around the State this summer, as the annual Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge sets off to ‘Explore Western Australia’.
The theme of this year’s challenge, which has been expanded to include the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS Readathon program, will see students join mascot Bosko as he travels around the State.
The challenge aims to get children to read for 10 to 15 hours – depending on their ages – during the annual summer break.
“Kids can read anything they like during this challenge, such as books, magazines, newspapers and comics, as long as they’re reading,” said Mr Waldron.
One lucky child will win an Explore Western Australia family holiday to the value of $6000.
This is the first year that students have the opportunity to raise funds for the MS Society as part of the challenge.
Chief executive officer of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Marcus Stafford said this was a fantastic way to raise awareness of MS among school communities and that all funds raised will support Western Australian people living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders.
The challenge commenced on 1 December 2011 and runs until 6 February 2012 for all students from kindergarten to year seven.
