Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced $2.645million in Royalties for Regions funding to upgrade Wedge Street, completing the West End Revitalisation project to refurbish Port Hedland’s main business precinct.
Mr Grylls said the project aligned with the State Government’s Pilbara Cities vision to create modern, well-serviced cities in Port Hedland and Karratha, with each growing their populations to 50,000 people by 2035.
“The West End is being transformed into a vibrant, attractive place where Port Hedland’s growing community can enjoy improved facilities and amenities, with the Wedge Street upgrade being a vital component,” he said.
“The enhancement of Wedge Street will encourage new industries such as hospitality and small business to prosper, which is key to diversifying Port Hedland’s economy, and provide more opportunities for community events to be held in the area.”
The improvements will include shade structures; seating; landscaping; signage; public art and greater accessibility to pedestrian traffic.
The Minister said that work to refurbish the business precinct had been ongoing since 2007, with the support of the Town of Port Hedland, the Pilbara Development Commission, the Port Hedland Port Authority, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and FORM.
“It’s fantastic to see this project nearing completion, with Royalties for Regions contributing to the creation of a distinctive urban precinct in the heart of Port Hedland,” Mr Grylls said.
“The Pilbara Cities Office is working on many projects to deliver first class services and amenities to the people of the Pilbara, and visitors to the region.”
