Since the State Government announcement of its Pilbara Cities initiative two years ago, the first completed project will be delivered today in South Hedland, with the opening of the new town square and main street.
Stage 1 of the South Hedland Town Centre Revitalisation was funded by $23.3million from Royalties for Regions and features a realigned main street, a new town square with amphitheatre, a shaded market walk, water play area and public art plus a number mixed use sites providing a diversity of residential and commercial opportunities.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the delivery of this project marked a historical day for Hedland and the Pilbara as a whole.
“This new town centre will become a focal point and gathering place for the whole community, and help change the way people live in the town, which is what Pilbara Cities is all about,” Mr Grylls said.
“In a relatively short amount of time we have transformed a dull and outdated town centre into a pedestrian friendly and welcoming space.
“These facilities will create a place for the community to enjoy a range of activities including outdoor performances, street markets and picnics.
“People can now walk the landscaped new main street under shade from trees and overhead structures featuring motion-sensor water misters.”
The Minister said the town square also featured a number of interactive works of art completed by local artists.
Additional work on Stage 2 of the South Hedland Town Centre Revitalisation has begun following an allocation of $53.94million in Royalties for Regions funding.
LandCorp will unlock expanses of vacant land in the heart of the town into seven medium-density commercial and residential lots that may feature an entertainment precinct with a cinema, restaurants, cafes, a bar and boutique shops.
