Up to 31 positions will be created to expand drug and alcohol treatment, prevention and counselling services across the Kimberley and Pilbara, thanks to a $16.4million over four-year commitment from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said suitably qualified people would be recruited to work on targeted prevention activity, alcohol management planning and increased local treatment services.
“Where there is the opportunity we will work directly with regional communities to train and develop local people to fill these roles. This will build capacity in regional towns, as community members feel empowered to help themselves and the investment in expertise and knowledge remains within their community,” Mrs Morton said.
The Minister added that an open tender process to recruit agencies to deliver these additional services was under way and there had already been significant interest from local agencies.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said through Royalties for Regions, the program would assist regional communities to achieve improved access to an essential service with funding available for the next four years.
“This important program will not only help to expand employment opportunities in regional towns and retain regional employees, but also provide a quality service to support those who need it the most,” Mr Grylls said.
Mrs Morton recognised the growing number of communities working hard to address alcohol-related issues, which can result in significant health and mental health issues.
“We want to encourage and support anyone who wants to make a positive change in their lives, or within their community,” she said.
