Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced $45million State Government Royalties for Regions funding towards Carnarvon Stage 2 Flood Mitigation Works.
The Royalties for Regions funding includes $25million from the Gascoyne Development Plan (GDP) and $20million from the Regional Development Water and Natural Resource Management Gascoyne Food Bowl and Flood Mitigation Initiative.
Mr Grylls said this would allow the Shire of Carnarvon to leverage other funding to support the proposal, which will significantly improve the level of flood protection for the Carnarvon horticultural industry and provide increased food security for West Australians and export markets.
“The proposed works include the construction of a levee system to protect the Carnarvon horticulture industry and surrounding communities from severe flooding,” he said.
“This project will assist in establishing a more sustainable social and economic base for the region as well as contributing to the State’s economy.”
The Minister said the initiative aligned to the State Government’s Gascoyne Flood Recovery Plan and would form part of the Government’s commitment to be responsive to the needs of the Gascoyne regional communities following the 2010 floods.
North-West MLA Vincent Catania said the works project would help mitigate the devastating impact caused by flooding and ensure the economic future of the horticulture industry and the town.
The State Government has also written to the Federal Government seeking a funding contribution towards the flood mitigation project.
The project will be completed over four years commencing in 2011-12.
