The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Burt Street Heritage Precinct Restoration Project was today given a boost of $1.35million from the successful Royalties for Regions Program.

The City have been working on the Burt Street project after an earthquake shook the area in April 2010, followed by storms earlier this year which exasperated restoration efforts.

"The area is of such significance to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community, and forms such a large part of the rich heritage and cultural history of our State," said Ms Duncan.

"With many of the buildings along Burt Street entered in the State Heritage Register, this further funding will ensure that the restoration of this historic area progresses as quickly as possible."

Ms Duncan also added that today’s announcement included that the cleared site where the Boulder United Friendly Society (BUFS) building previously stood, would be transferred in freehold from the State to the City.

"Sadly the BUFS building was demolished due to severe structural damage endured in both the earthquake and the storm."

"The site however would continue to add significant value to the Burt Street precinct through housing improved facilities for the community," said Ms Duncan.

The Royalties for Regions funding compliments the State Government’s contribution of $5million towards the City’s Earthquake Restoration Fund which provides emergency relief and restoration grants for earthquake building repairs.
