YOUNG athletes across O’Connor have shared in grants totalling $6500 as part of the Local Sporting Champions program.
The Nationals WA Federal Member for O’Connor, Tony Crook MP, recently announced the successful recipients for the Local Sporting Champions grants.
Eleven young athletes from regional Western Australia were selected as grant recipients for the latest round of funding, covering a diverse range of sports including squash, surfing, and table tennis.
Individual applicants each received grants of $500 to go towards travel and equipment costs when competing away from home.
Mr Crook said the funding would allow for young sports stars to take their chosen sport to the next level.
“We have some terrific young athletes in regional areas. Each of these candidates is already a standout in their field,” Mr Crook said.
“Thanks to the Local Sporting Champions program, these young athletes will have the opportunity to travel and participate in State and National events for their chosen sports.”
“I’m very pleased to see this funding going towards developing our sporting champions of the future,” Mr Crook said.
The O’Connor Local Sporting Champions panel has assisted a total of 33 individuals and one team with grants since 2010.
The Local Sporting Champion program is a Federal Government initiative providing financial assistance for junior sportspeople towards the cost of travel and equipment for national and state events.
Applications for the next round of funding are now open and will close February 29, 2012.
