Waldron welcomes assistance to thunderstorm affected areas

Local Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA has welcomed the announcement that natural disaster assistance will be offered to communities in the Wagin electorate affected by December’s severe thunderstorms and flooding.

A surface trough triggered severe thunderstorms on 30 and 31 December 2010, which caused heavy rainfall and flooding in the Shires of Cuballing, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Wandering and Wickepin.

Emergency Services Minister Troy Buswell proclaimed the event an eligible disaster under the Western Australia Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, which enables the State Government to effectively and efficiently assist those who have been affected by natural disaster.

Mr Waldron applauded the announcement, saying the funding will help councils and communities get back to on their feet as quickly as possible.

“There appears to be a lot of damage to road infrastructure and this funding will help local governments work closely with Main Roads to repair the affected roads promptly,” said Mr Waldron.

The funding is a joint initiative between the Federal and Western Australian governments and will be administered through WA Government agencies.
