The Nationals have expressed their support for an initiative by the Shire of Derby/WestKimberley to carry out a study into a possible industrial and supply base at Point Torment.
Nationals Candidate for the Kimberley, John McCourt, said Derby deserved support in its proactive measures to carve out a strong economic future for the town.
“The potential for an industrial support base at Point Torment is one of a number of projects that the Shire is looking at to drive its economy,” Mr. McCourt said.
“It is a logical progression to examine that potential and the likely impact of any development on environmental, economic, heritage and social bases.”
Mr. McCourt said the Council was already committed to a comprehensive process of consultation to ensure that indigenous heritage and environmental values are fully respected and protected for any local project of this nature.
“I am a realist and look to the best possible outcome for the region and that’s why I support the Shire’s initiative to back up it’s plans for the future with solid analysis.
“It is vitally important that we don’t lose important economic initiatives that can serve the region without due process in researching options and balancing environmental issues with economic opportunity which means jobs and prosperity.
“Should the Nationals gain the balance of power at the coming election, the party would be in the perfect position to influence any outcomes for the betterment of the Kimberley,” Mr. McCourt said.
Mr. McCourt reiterated that it was his position that any onshore LNG processing facility needed as a result of exploration in the Browse Basin be a single hub facility.
