No laughing matter Mr Carpenter, McCourt

Nationals candidate for the Kimberley John McCourt says Broome residents should feel insulted by the attitude of Premier Alan Carpenter toward the current health crisis in town.

Mr Carpenter was responding to a question by a Broome resident on ABC radio this morning about the lack of doctors in town.

The female caller asked the Premier what could be done. Mr Carpenter responded that his Government had improved facilities at the local hospital and other services.

Pushed to respond specifically to the shortage of doctors, the Premier laughed and reminded the caller he was doing something – then elaborated on what his Government was doing about housing.

“We have a very real problem in Broome right now with the lack of doctors and we need mature and responsible action including commitments by both major parties to help fix the problem,” Mr McCourt said.

“We don’t need to be laughed at. We need some leadership in terms of actually doing something about a very important issue which is about having enough doctors to service a town that’s growing in population and in tourism,” Mr McCourt said.
