The Nationals WA have reaffirmed their opposition to extended retail trading hours, saying they would not abandon the position they campaigned on at the last election.
Nationals Members in the Legislative Council today rejected a Liberal Party motion calling for the Labor Party to change its policy position on the extension of shopping hours in the Perth metropolitan area.
Member for the South West Region Colin Holt said voters had made their position clear at the 2005 referendum on extended trading hours.
“The Nationals gave voters an assurance before the last election that we would not support extended trading hours – nothing has changed,” Mr Holt said.
Mr Holt also said the issue was not only for city members to decide because the effects of deregulation would reach into the regions and have a particular impact on small businesses and primary producers who supplied fresh produce into the grocery sector.
“Arguments have been raised today in the House about the convenience of extended trading hours for shoppers, but this is about much more than being able to duck out for a loaf of bread after 5.30pm or going clothes shopping without your kids tagging along.
“Evidence from other jurisdictions has shown that deregulated shopping hours has resulted in the same spend by consumers spread over a longer period of time.
“In effect, businesses could expect no significant increase in sales, but there would be a guaranteed increase in wages and outgoings to remain open for longer which would be detrimental to small businesses.
“The Nationals will stand by small business and the jobs these businesses create in the State.”
