Waldron pursues Post Office concerns

Local Member for Wagin and Deputy Leader of The Nationals WA Terry Waldron has arranged a meeting with senior Australia Post executives this month to air and pursue issues affecting licensed post offices in our country towns.

“I have had strong representation from several operators of licensed post offices in rural WA, raising several issues of concern, affecting the viability of those essential small businesses in our country towns,” Mr Waldron said.

“I have arranged a meeting with senior management of Australia Post along with representatives from the Post Office Association Limited to look seriously at these issues and hopefully address the concerns raised,” he said.

Mr Waldron stressed he was concerned and was eager to ensure fair conditions and agreements were in place to ensure the ongoing viability of these essential service businesses.

“Our licensed post offices, particularly in our smaller country towns are vital to the local community and we must ensure they can continue to provide their essential service,” Mr Waldron said.

“Australia Post requirements on and payments to the licensed post offices, along with business classifications, postage and other regulations need to be looked at closely, reviewed and charges made to fit in with and address local needs,” he said.

Mr Waldron said he was pleased to be facilitating the meeting that would also look at other post office and mailing issues.

“I will also be raising the need for further mail services in country WA where the demographics have changed,” Mr Waldron said. “The Federal Government has a responsibility to make certain that our country towns retain their post offices and that Australia Post keep pace with its services for country people,” he said.

Mr Waldron who conducted a detailed survey on licensed post offices in 2002, will consult again with local licensed post offices following the Australia Post meeting.
