Waldron backs RAC’s road funding for safety call

Author: Terry Waldron
Published on: 17-January-2008

Nationals Deputy Leader and local member for Wagin Terry Waldron has backed the recent call by the RAC to increase dramatically road funding for country road improvements, to make dangerous country roads safer.

“Funding for inland country roads has been slashed under the Labor Government and there is no doubt that dangerous roads are contributing to our country road deaths and serious injury,” Mr Waldron said.

“The new road safety strategy proposes the need for safer roads, safer road shoulders, protective road barriers and clearer road verges so we must invest more money to address these improvements to country roads,” he said.

Mr Waldron stressed that this year with the State having a huge surplus, was the ideal time for the State Government to be serious about country road safety and to increase substantially the budget allocation to inland country roads.

“The Government and Road Safety Council have the statistics and we must target and upgrade those identified priority dangerous roads,” Mr Waldron said.

“Dangerous bends, dangerous verges and road shoulders should be targeted along with extra passing lanes on our major highways,” he said.

Mr Waldron said while excessive speed was a factor in road accidents, he felt this was not the priority and speed limits should only be lowered on known dangerous sections.

“I am satisfied that 110kph is a fair speed limit for country WA roads and other areas such as driver inattentiveness, driver training and targeting dangerous roads should be a priority” Mr Waldron said.

“I strongly support and encourage the great work local Roadwise committees, police and service clubs are doing and encourage the Government to invest more money to assist these groups in their local strategy’s that target our local drivers,” he said.
