Private sector joins Government in delivering ‘Pilbara Cities' vision, Grylls.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls today announced two exciting private sector initiatives aimed at revitalising South Hedland.

Mr Grylls said the projects were an excellent example of how the State Government and the private sector could work together to deliver the ‘Pilbara Cities’ vision.

“South Hedland’s revitalisation would provide a boost to local businesses and create a better lifestyle for the growing number of families settling permanently in the region,” he said.

South Hedland Shopping Centre would receive a facelift as part of the revitalisation of the town centre and many options were currently being reviewed with the aim to commence on site later this year.

These would complement the creation of a tree-lined boulevard with alfresco cafés and retail areas.

“Initially Lot 21, a 1.19ha mixed use development site will be released next Wednesday, the first parcel of land released as part of several upgrades to South Hedland’s town centre,” the Minister said.

Private sector developers would be engaged to undertake the built form development on this site, which would include a mix of retail, office, medical and medium density housing options for the community.

Under the ‘Pilbara Cities’ vision the revitalisation of South Hedland would ultimately include a new town square with a retail and cafe strip; shade structures; a grassed amphitheatre-style multi-use event space; a water-play area; public artworks; and lighting to address any community concerns relating to safety and security.
