The official start to phase one works on the multi-million dollar Kalgoorlie Hospital upgrade is being celebrated in Kalgoorlie today.
Member for Mining and Pastoral Hon Wendy Duncan MLC was in Kalgoorlie for the ‘breaking ground’ ceremony and welcomed the redevelopment which would provide a vital regional health facility.
“Kalgoorlie Hospital is the major trauma centre servicing the Goldfields and providing essential comfort and care to its people.
“The state government is providing $55.8million for the redevelopment of Kalgoorlie Hospital - $15.8million to come from the Royalties for Regions funding,” Ms Duncan said.
Phase one is due for completion before the end of 2010. It includes a newly built 3 bed palliative care facility and upgraded power facilities.
The completed upgrade, due by 2012 includes:
- Construction of a new palliative care unit including a courtyard
- Enlargement and refurbishment of the ensuites on the medical ward
- Refurbishment of the existing emergency department and medical imaging unit for use by allied health services such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy
- Creation of a new entrance for the hospital and refurbishment of the admissions and reception area
- Improved car parking for patients, visitors and staff
- An upgrade to site and engineering services
"It is a thrill to see Royalties for Regions dollars hitting the ground and making a real difference to regional communities," Ms Duncan said.
