The State Government’s $220million Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project took another step forward today with the announcement of the preferred tenderer for the workers’ accommodation village.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said Fleetwood Pty Ltd
had been selected to build, operate and maintain the key piece of infrastructure for the duration of the Liberal-National Government’s Royalties for Regions project.
“The workers’ village will accommodate workers who will be building the channels, roads and drainage infrastructure associated with the irrigation expansion project during the 2010 and 2011 dry seasons,” Mr Grylls said.
“To ensure tourism accommodation availability is not adversely affected by the influx of construction workers, 150 beds and the associated amenity buildings will be commissioned in the village ready for the start of the main contract works.”
The Minister said the village had been designed with a capacity of up to 250 beds and would also contain kitchens, laundries, a wet mess, recreation room and gym.
The contractor would also refurbish 25 accommodation units which had already been purchased by the Government and were being stored in Kununurra.
“This company has a wealth of experience in the construction and operation of similar facilities across Australia,” Mr Grylls said.
“They were selected on value for money and the opportunities they will offer local businesses, as well as indigenous employment prospects.”
Work is under way to prepare the site for the successful proponent. Preparatory earthworks have commenced.
