MEMBER for Mining and Pastoral Region Hon Wendy Duncan MLC is in Kalgoorlie today to launch this year’s Science Awareness Festival at the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame.
Ms Duncan said she was proud to be launching the festival to highlight how the science festival, with its showcase of businesses, community organizations and government departments, demonstrated the great collaborative effort involved in keeping the Goldfields region prosperous and the correlating careers this offers.
“I can only hope that the 1500 local students involved in this event find it the rewarding and inspirational learning experience that I have found it to be,” she said.
“The festival gives students exposure to a number of industries and their representatives, which they may otherwise not have an opportunity to see.”
The festival will be in Kalgoorlie from March 24-26.
Its key aims are:
• Showcase to high school students the sheer number of jobs that use science and technology, in particular, in the local region.
• By maintaining science and maths as subjects throughout high school the students’ options for careers increase.
• Students do not necessarily have to complete tertiary studies in science to use science in a job, and by having an understanding of science this will assist them in making decisions that may affect how they live their lives.
“Congratulations to the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame and Scitech on developing a very valuable partnership in delivering science and an understanding of the mining industry to the Goldfields community. I am sure we will see many more exciting activities at the Hall of Fame as a result of this relationship.”
