State Government plans to create a heavy industrial park near Collie have taken a step forward following the Shire of Collie’s endorsement of proposals to amend the Town Planning Scheme.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said Shotts Industrial Park would help ensure Collie’s future as a centre for industry and employment.
“The Government, through the Department of State Development, LandCorp and with the assistance of State Land Services, has been working to assemble and rezone the land required to create the 235ha Shotts Industrial Park, about seven kilometres east of Collie’s town centre,” Mr Grylls said.
“Land on which the industrial park will be built is predominantly owned by the Government but held under a variety of titles and zonings. The land needs to be rezoned to build the park.
“To achieve this, we have proposed amendments to the Shire of Collie’s town planning scheme, which the shire has supported.”
LandCorp has also developed a structure plan for the park, providing a framework to co-ordinate land use, development, infrastructure and the provision of services.
“Environmental impact assessment studies covering flora and fauna; surface and ground water management; and air quality and noise have been completed to support the town planning scheme amendment process,” the Minister said.
Mr Grylls said the shire had referred the proposed scheme amendment to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for analysis in accordance with section 48a of the Environment Protection Act 1986 and the EPA had now approved the amendment for advertising.
The amendment and the draft structure plan are being advertised for public comment.
LandCorp will host a public information session at the Margaretta Wilson Centre in Collie on Saturday, May 1 between 10am and 2pm.
“Everyone with an interest in the area is welcome to view the proposals and seek further information from representatives of LandCorp and the shire,” the Minister said.
Mr Grylls said two key tenants had been identified by the Government for coal-related downstream value-adding industries.
“Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers has proposed a $3.5billion coal to urea plant on 125ha in the park, while Wesfarmers’ Premier Coal is proposing a potential coal char plant on a 55ha site within the park,” he said.
