Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies has welcomed today’s demonstration against the government’s proposed ‘stop and search’ laws as a display highlighting our State’s healthy democratic system.
Human rights group Search for your rights lead the demonstration at Parliament House today.
Ms Davies said it was great to see young people engaging with the political process and making their voice heard on issues that matter to them.
“The proposed amendments to the Criminal Investigation Act will have serious implications for some sectors of the community,” Ms Davies said.
“I welcome the public making their views known to the Parliament, whether it’s by way of a protest, petition or meeting directly with their Member of Parliament.
“Far too often people feel disenfranchised or distanced from the decision made by the Parliament and are discouraged from engaging in debate about issues that they care about.”
People concerned about the proposed ‘stop and search laws’ presented a petition during the demonstration today.
“The petition is a good way for groups and individuals to get their concerns heard and formally present their issue to Parliament,” Ms Davies said.
The Legislation Committee, of which Ms Davies is a member, is currently examining the proposed legislation.
The Committee is scheduled to report to the Legislative Council in June.
