Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies has welcomed the opening of the new $54.5 million Muchea Livestock Centre.
Ms Davies joined guests to witness the charity auction at the facility before sales commenced yesterday. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“The new facility is a great development for producers, buyers, agents and transporters who have been calling for the marked a new era for Western Australia’s livestock industries Midland Saleyards to be replaced for years,” Ms Davies said.
“The opening of the centre marks a new era for Western Australia’s livestock industries, with vast improvements in workers conditions, animal welfare and environmental outcomes.
The Muchea Livestock Centre can accommodate up to 3,400 cattle and 28,000 sheep daily and has been designed to allow producers to present their animals in the best possible manner.
About 50,000 West Australians are directly employed in primary production (agriculture, forestry and fishing) with another 45,000 employed by supporting industries.
The Muchea Livestock Centre is part of the Government’s Regional Saleyard Strategy, which is continuing with the replacement or upgrade of the Katanning, Boyanup and Mount Barker saleyards.
