Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies has welcomed the announcement from Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman that Western Australia will host a pilot of drought reform measures aimed at preparing farm businesses and rural communities for future challenges.
Mr Redman and Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke announced Western Australia will join with the Federal Government to trial a new drought assistance package.
“This is a significant shift in the approach to drought policy, helping to strengthen farm businesses and build resilient rural communities,” Ms Davies said.
“Western Australian farmers are among the most innovative and adaptive in the country. The new approach to drought assistance recognises this, while providing the resources to ensure farm businesses can improve resilience and plan for the future.
“It is particularly good to see a strong focus on delivering coordinated support services for rural communities and families during times of hardship, including support for mental health issues and strengthening social linkages so people experiencing hardship understand they’re not alone.”
The pilot region has been selected based on previous recipients of Exceptional Circumstances (EC) and extends from Karratha to Esperance, covering 67 local government authorities.
Ms Davies said the proactive approach in helping farmers to further build resilient businesses and prepare for bad years was a significant development.
“The pilot will improve farmers’ access to training and support, rather than the slow and bureaucratic process of applying for Exceptional Circumstances,” Ms Davies said.
“I am mindful that this is a pilot, and as such there will be learnings to be made by all parties involved as the sector engages with Government.
“I’d encourage farmers and communities to investigate how this package may assist them tackle the tough times.”
The pilot will start on 1 July 2010 and end on 30 June 2011. For more information about the drought assistance pilot please contact 13 23 16 or visit www.daff.gov.au/droughtpilot.
