A new home for WA netball, Waldron

Thousands of young West Australian netballers will benefit from the State Government’s delivery of a new $26million State Netball Centre.

The centre will include four world-standard indoor netball courts and office space for Netball WA at the Matthews Netball Centre in Floreat.

The facility will enable State league matches to be played at a single venue, help the sport further promote itself and keep girls and young women active.

Premier Colin Barnett joined with Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron to announce the new facility.

“Netball is the number one participation sport for women in Western Australia and is the backbone of female participation in many WA country towns,” Mr Barnett said.

“Each week more than 100,000 people attend netball courts as players, coaches, umpires, officials, administrators, volunteers and spectators. With more than 800 affiliated netball clubs in WA, a facility of this standard is long overdue.

”It is time that enthusiastic netball players have a modern place to train and play.”

Mr Waldron said the new State Netball Centre would encourage young women to continue their netball careers.

“Providing a home for the State League competition will enable thousands of young girls watch the best of WA netball in action every week. This sort of role modelling will encourage young girls to continue to play netball,” Mr Waldron said.

“One of our biggest challenges is keeping young women active and participating in sport and recreation, particularly through the teen years.

“Netball is the key in helping us to achieve this important objective, so I am particularly pleased with this investment in the health of the community.”

The West Coast Fever will continue to play at Challenge Stadium. International tests will be played at the Perth Arena in the near future.

Construction of the new facility is scheduled to commence in mid-2012 and will be managed by VenuesWest.
