The Nationals’ Senate candidate for WA John McCourt has welcomed the establishment of a branch of the party in Broome.
An inaugural meeting held this month saw the formal setting up of the branch which adds to a thriving Nationals WA branch in Kununurra.
Mr. McCourt said the growth of interest in National Party policy in the Kimberley reflects the considerable efforts being taken to address the challenges and opportunities for the region.
He says the Nationals are making good commitments made at the 2008 State election and have a strong commitment to providing the people of the Kimberley the support they deserve in State Parliament.
Mr. McCourt said the challenge now is to have Broome and the rest of the Kimberley faithfully and vigorously represented in Federal Parliament.
“I am now working hard to assist the Nationals’ candidate for Durack, Lynne Craigie, to win the new seat of Durack and take her seat in the House of Representatives,” Mr. McCourt said.
“As a consequence of support for Lynne, I am looking forward to my position as No1 on the Nationals WA senate ticket to hopefully represent WA and the Kimberley in the Australian Senate.
Mr. McCourt has reiterated his call on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to reverse the rip-off by guaranteeing to match WA’s Royalties for Regions funding dollar-for-dollar.
Mr McCourt says the PM and Mr Abbott must, in the lead up to the Federal Election, commit to a proposal by The Nationals WA that the Royalties for Regions fund should be matched.
