Nationals’ member for the South West Region, Colin Holt MLC, has welcomed the government’s reinvestment in the infill sewage program, saying that those areas that need it the most should be done as soon as possible.
“There are many areas that desperately need it, none more so than the area known as Murray Bend in the Shire of Murray” said Mr Holt.
“The community have put up overflowing septic tanks for too long, and the Murray River is always at risk”.
Late last year the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs investigated the Infill Sewage needs of the State. Their report identified the Murray Bend area as of a high priority due to high environmental and social impacts.
“I have written to Minister Jacobs highlighting the report’s findings to ensure that the Murray Bend area is put on the top of the list. I have also offered to meet him ‘on-site’ so he can see for himself the importance of the program in this area” said Mr Holt.
In the recent budget, the State Government has committed $100m over four years to the program, with Minister Jacobs saying that he will be prioritising areas shortly.
