'Infill sewage program will benefit regions', Davies

Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies MLC, has welcomed the Government’s reinvestment in the infill sewage program, saying those areas that need it the most should be done as soon as possible.

A total of $100 million over four years was committed to the program in the recent State Budget, with Minister for Water, Dr Graham Jacobs, stating that he will prioritise areas shortly.

Ms Davies said she hoped Minister Jacobs would recognise Hyden as a priority for the program.

“While I understand there will be a number of high priority areas across the State, the residents of Hyden – along with other towns in the Wheatbelt – have put up with the unacceptable situation of overflowing septic tanks for too long,” Ms Davies said.

Ms Davies said she was hopeful to see the Infill Sewerage Program up and running again as soon as possible.

“I have written to Minister Jacobs to ensure that the situation in Hyden does not go unnoticed,” Ms Davies said.

The Infill Sewerage Program aims to connect properties to a central sewerage system – moving away from a reliance on septic tanks.

So far, 88,000 properties have been connected to the system, including 25,000 in regional areas.
