Improvement works at regional airports across the State begin soon following the announcement of almost $7million in State grants, including $5.5million through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said the latest round of funding was the highest in the 14-year history of the Regional Airports Development Scheme in Western Australia and would contribute significantly to improving airport services.

"This year, 36 regional airports will share $6.87million for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance programs to provide improved access for communities, safer emergency evacuations and greater tourism opportunities," Mr O'Brien said.

"Since 1997, more than $28million has been funded by the State Government to regional aviation infrastructure, with a total project value of more than $83million."

The biggest grants for the 2010-11 round were awarded to Kununurra ($1.8million) to expand the airport terminal and to Port Hedland ($800,000) for substantial upgrades to the runway and terminal facilities.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the Royalties for Regions program provided a significant and much needed funding boost, enabling a wider scope of projects to be eligible for funding.

"The funding was committed to building stronger regional communities, especially for people in remote areas," Mr Grylls said.

“This will ensure regional airports continue to play a vital part in supporting communities, business and tourism across the State.”
