Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the agreement enabled the Government to proceed with a number of proposed developments in the town, as well as providing benefits for the Ngarluma native title holders.
To mark the agreement, Mr Grylls presented the corporation with a cheque for $1million as an advance payment of a $37million agreement that would see the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation receive land for development opportunities and proceeds from the sale of some of the developed lots.
“This is a great result for everyone involved,” the Minister said.
“There is huge demand for land in Karratha for residential, commercial and industrial purposes and the demand is only going to increase as existing resource projects expand and new projects come on line.
“The agreement with Ngarluma means we can go ahead with many proposed developments proposed for the townsite and I congratulate everyone involved in bringing the agreement to fruition.
“This includes the Ngarluma representatives and officers from the Department of Regional Development and Lands and LandCorp, who have worked closely to achieve the best results.
“The agreement unlocks huge potential for all people in the Pilbara and Western Australia.”
Projects planned for Karratha included:
- Gap Ridge industrial estate, 259 hectares on the south side of Dampier Road (industrial)
- Nickol West extension, 24 hectares on the north side of Dampier Road (residential)
- Baynton West infill, three hectares on the south side of Dampier Road (residential)
- Tambrey mixed use site, four hectares on the north side of Dampier Road (commercial and residential)
- Gap Ridge North, 100 hectares on the north side of Dampier Road (potential mix of residential and non-residential uses)
- Mulataga East, 50 hectares on the south side of Mystery Road (residential).
North-West MLA Vince Catania said this would free up land for the town’s continued development.
