Local Member for Wagin Terry Waldron said improvement works at Wheatbelt airports would soon be underway, following the allocation of almost $7million in State grants.

Mr Waldron said the money had been made available under the State Government’s Regional Airports Development Scheme, and included $5.5million from the Royalties for Regions program.

“Airports in the Wheatbelt region have been awarded a total of $1,079,423 for the following projects,” Mr Waldron said.

Works in the Wheatbelt region are:

Description
  • Corrigin: Increase the apron size and replace the wind direction indicator to comply with Royal Flying Doctor Service specifications, upgrade the apron lighting and construct a new patient transfer facility
  • Cunderdin: Create a commercial aviation precinct development plan
  • Kondinin: Install animal-proof fencing and lockable security gates for entry and exit of the airport runway
  • Nugadong (Dalwallinu): Resurface the runway, construct a patient transfer facility and erect a kangaroo-proof fence
  • Varley – Kulin: Reconstruct the gravel surface, drainage systems and replace markers
  • Wyalkatchem: Design and build facilities including a terminal, runways, taxiways and aprons

Earlier, State Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said this round of funding was the highest in the history of regional airport development in Western Australia and would contribute significantly to improving airport services.

"Since 1997 more than $28million has been committed by the State Government to regional aviation infrastructure projects, with a total project value of more than $83million," he said.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the Royalties for Regions program provided a significant and much needed funding boost that had enabled a wider scope of projects to be eligible for funding.
"The funding will ensure regional airports continue to play a vital part in supporting communities, business and tourism across the state,” Mr Waldron said.
