The South Hedland community will have access to one of the State’s best recreation venues as work commences on the redevelopment of the existing centre.

Visiting the site today, Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the redevelopment of the JD Hardie Recreation Centre formed part of the State Government’s $1billion Pilbara Cities initiative.

Mr Grylls said Broad Construction Services had been awarded the tender to upgrade the existing building which included additional offices, meeting rooms and a new multi-purpose space.

“The design of the centre allows it to be used for a number of purposes and includes a Youth Zone which will provide offices for youth service providers,” he said.

The $9.55million project has received $2.9million in Royalties for Regions funding, with additional funding provided from BHP Billiton Iron Ore, South Hedland New Living, Newcrest Mining and the Town of Port Hedland.

The Minister said the centre had received overwhelming support from residents including youth, government and non-government agencies.

I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions funding helping to deliver recreational and development opportunities which help to attract people to the area and also benefit surrounding communities,” he said.

Town of Port Hedland mayor Kelly Howlett said redeveloping the centre represented the most significant investment in youth facilities and services in the town’s history.

“Regular council surveys have identified the provision of youth services and facilities are crucial to the local community,” Ms Howlett said.

“We are building and operating some of the best quality facilities, services and activities available in Western Australia.”
