EOI announced for Coral Bay seasonal staff accommodation, Grylls

Author: Brendon Grylls
Published on: 31-August-2010

Urgently-needed accommodation at Coral Bay would be developed with the State Government calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to construct and operate a 70-person complex in Coral Bay that would provide quality affordable rental accommodation for seasonal service staff.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said he had been working together with the Baiyungu Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) to find a solution to the significant challenge of housing for essential seasonal workers who were vital to the town’s tourism economy.

“Together with the BAC, we are unlocking the huge potential for growth in Coral Bay. Seasonal workers are crucial to the region’s tourism industry and through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program we are providing funding to develop an accommodation facility for those temporary workers,” Mr Grylls said.

The Minister has also signed the transfer of land designated for the development of an eco-tourism site to the BAC.

The transfer is in accordance with a framework agreement signed in June 2009 between the State and the BAC, after consent had been obtained from the Gnulli native title claim group to start developments at the popular tourist town.

Following the signing, a meeting with the local community was held to discuss the projects planned for the area including:

  • workers’ accommodation site to allow development of long-term affordable housing
  • accommodation for seasonal service workers
  •  ecotourism site to develop an eco resort.

The EOI process for the seasonal workers accommodation, and the initial development approval requirements, are being handled by LandCorp, who will hand over management of the project to the successful proponent to work closely with the BAC to ensure maximum opportunity for the Baiyungu people to be involved.

Submissions close on October 12. The EOI document and support material can be downloaded from http://www.landcorp.com.au/coralbay
