Member for the South West, Colin Holt has again confirmed The Nationals opposition to forced Local Government amalgamations after the Local Government Reform Steering Committee Report was tabled in parliament by Minister for Local Government, John Castrili.
“With the release of this report, it is timely to reiterate The Nationals position on Local Government amalgamations,” Mr Holt said.
“We have been clear from the outset and The Nationals maintain that we do not support forced Local Government amalgamations.”
“I believe Local Governments in the South West can achieve a great deal of reform and efficiencies without the need for forced amalgamations. Many South West Local Governments are already working well together. The Bunbury Wellington Economic Alliance is a great example of this.”
Local Governments realise that there is a need to continually review how they operate to deliver the best service and outcomes for their communities. I am sure they will be looking at further reforms at an appropriate pace.
