Member for the Agricultural Region, Hon Max Trenorden MLC, spoke today about the recent release of a short report examining alternative pathways to structural reform of local government in Western Australia.
The report was prepared together with Hon Nigel Hallett MLC, Member for the South West Region, after extensive and detailed consultation with local governments across Australia.
Mr Trenorden said the report offered a refreshing take on how Western Australian local governments can assure their futures.
“There is a huge degree of concern among local councils that the Minister for Local Government is herding them down a path towards forced amalgamations,” he said.
“To date, all but a very small number of councils have displayed a willingness to amalgamate, some of the reasons for which are outlined in the report.”
The report, available from either Mr Trenorden’s or Mr Hallett’s office, looks in particular at the situation of reform in South Australia and provides suggestions as to a more amicable and appropriate approach for Western Australia.
