Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies has asked communities across regional Western Australia to recognise White Ribbon Day on 25 November 2009 – an International Day for the elimination of violence against women.
Ms Davies said family and domestic violence remains among the biggest health risks to adult women in Australia and is a major concern in regional communities. According to the White Ribbon Organisation one in three Australian women will experience physical or sexual violence by a man at some point in their lives.
"By purchasing and wearing a White Ribbon you are helping to raise awareness and hopefully helping to stop violence against women," Ms Davies said. "Wearing a White Ribbon is a sign that the wearer does not support or condone the use of violence against women."
White Ribbon Day aims to eliminate violence against women by promoting culture-change around the issue. In 2006 more than 300,000 White Ribbons were distributed as part of White Ribbon Day. Proceeds from purchasing a White Ribbon go towards changing community attitudes through community awareness campaigns.
