Member for Moore, Grant Woodhams MLA has welcomed State Government funding for year 11 and 12 Vocational Education and Training programs at targeted District High Schools.

Mr Woodhams said access to year 11 and 12 courses at District High Schools was particularly important in regional areas.

“The Nationals are working hard to ensure students in regional WA have access to quality education and learning opportunities,” Mr Woodhams said.

“VET is particularly important in regional areas, where trade and vocational training will help students to form links with industry and take up employment opportunities in their town or in the regions.

“In many of these towns there is strong community and industry support for the VET courses and it’s good to see funding being made available to support this demand.”

Mr Woodhams said Jurien Bay District High School would benefit from the new targeted funding.

Carnamah, Dongara, Gingin, Jurien Bay, Mullewa and Dalwallinu District High Schools in the Moore electorate have been identified for this enrolment-based funding in 2011.

“The Nationals have long advocated that the needs of regional students and regional communities should be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

“In many regional towns there are openings for unique solutions, such as offering VET courses to year 11 and 12s at District High Schools, and I’m pleased the Government has acknowledged this with the flexible, targeted funding,” Mr Woodhams said.

The Department of Education is strengthening provision for other senior school students by locating them in regional secondary schools where they have a direct bus route or are able to board, or by enrolling the students in the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education.
