About 200 people from around the world are expected to attend the International Grains Council Forum in Perth today, to discuss issues surrounding grain supplies and global food security.
In his welcome address to forum delegates last night, Mr Redman said Western Australia was well placed to take a leading role in grains research and development.
“The State Government announced earlier this year a $30million investment towards the establishment of the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) in Perth,” he said.
“We want AEGIC to be a vibrant hub of science, technology and innovation, attracting the best people in the field from around the world.
“We are now seeking national and international partners for the development of this centre, which will lead Australian grains research, development and extension.”
The State Government has also invested $9million in research facilities at Merredin and Katanning, while the Department of Agriculture and Food was working on projects to boost grains yields in high rainfall areas and improve the resilience of farming systems in low rainfall areas.
The International Grains Council consists of 26 member countries and meets twice a year to discuss topical issues affecting the global grains industry.
“It is a great honour for Western Australia to host the 32nd session of the International Grains Council in Perth,” the Minister said.
“It is recognition of the important role WA plays in the international market as a major producer and exporter of grains.”
