The Department of Agriculture and Food’s 2011 Agribusiness Crop Updates will focus on the recovery of the State’s grains industries from a difficult dry season.

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman said the crop updates, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, would be held on February 23-24 at Burswood Conference Centre.

Registration has opened for the two-day conference which is expected to attract more than 400 agribusiness consultants, researchers and agronomists.

Mr Redman said the Agribusiness Crop Updates was Western Australia’s premier grains industry event and covered the sector’s key issues and opportunities.

“Following up from such a dry season in 2010 will present some significant challenges for the State’s grains industry,” he said.

“This year’s crop updates will address some of those issues and discuss strategies to help grain growers with planning for effective 2011 cropping programs.”

The dry season recovery, including an overview of 2010, economic imperatives and low risk cropping strategies, will be addressed by David Bowran from the Department of Agriculture and Food; Ken Sevenson of Farmanco; Geoff Fosberry of ConsultAg; and Julien Kreig from Wheatbelt Men’s Health.

The Minister said the comprehensive program would also showcase the latest research and development information in grain production and marketing.

International keynote speakers this year include Monsanto USA’s Sean Gardner to discuss global trends in cropping research; and an important session on developments in precision agriculture by Terry Picket from John Deere (Iowa, USA). Franz Doppmann of Syngenta (Singapore) will also speak on trends in crop protection.

Mr Redman said the agribusiness event would once again be followed by Wheatbelt Regional Crop Updates to bring growers up to date on the latest applicable on-farm developments.
