Nearly 50 shires across Western Australia have applied to install water tanks under the State Government’s dry season assistance measures.

The first of the water tanks have already arrived, with two 45,000 litre tanks ready to be installed at Kukerin on Monday following an application by the Shire of Dumbleyung.

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman said he was pleased with the uptake of measures under the $5million Dry Season Assistance Package.

The package, announced by the Premier and Mr Redman in November, will assist up to 100 drought-affected shires.

“An important part of the assistance package is $1million for the installation of high-volume water tanks at standpipes to assist fire response and water carting,” Mr Redman said.

“These are a long-term investment in infrastructure to help support local communities through future dry seasons.”

Other measures include community service grants ($2million), social support grants for counselling services ($1million), small business assistance ($500,000) and rural financial counselling ($200,000).

“So far, 64 shires have applied for up to $20,000 each in community service grants for community events,” the Minister said.

“I feel that bringing communities together and maintaining morale is vital.”

Mr Redman said many farmers and rural communities were now looking to the season ahead.

“Many of these will carry the financial and emotional toll of a tough 2010 season, so this transition period into 2011 will be critical,” he said.

“The Dry Season Advisory Committee will continue to operate, identifying key issues for farmers and rural communities.

“The Department of Agriculture and Food will also continue to provide practical support.”
