Nationals’ Member for the South West Region Hon. Colin Holt has welcomed the recent Government announcement to provide $15.2 million for a South West Radiation Oncology service in Bunbury Hospital from mid 2011.
The jointly funded program will see $9.2 million coming from the State Government and the Federal Government contributing the other $6 million.
This announcement means around 95 percent of cancer patients in the South West will be able to be treated at the Bunbury Centre.
“This is a fantastic result for the South West and will allow most patients to remain in Bunbury and close to their families instead of travelling to Perth for treatment,” said Mr Holt
“The provision of adequate cancer treatment in the South West is an issue which has been raised with me extensively and it is pleasing to see a substantial investment being made in Bunbury and South West.”
The South West commitment is part of an overall $200 million dollar contract awarded Genesis Care to provide state of the art radiotherapy services for Royal Perth Hospital, the new Fiona Stanley Hospital and Bunbury Hospital.
