MLA for Moore and self-proclaimed Minister for Speedway, Grant Woodhams believes the recent Western Australian Street Stock Sedan Championship held at Moora in late January was one of the best speedway events ever held in WA.
“The club was totally professional in the way in which they organised and ran the two nights of racing. The Moora club’s friendship, hospitality and helpfulness have set the standard for future events.” said Woodhams.
Over sixty competitors from around Western Australia, plus defending Champion, South Australian Anthony Beare competed in twenty seven events over the two nights. The Championship was won by Perth driver Jason Oldfield, with Moora’s Dale Cockman and Damon Brown finishing second and third respectively.
“Putting this sort of meeting on is not easy. The Shire of Moora also needed to be congratulated for their positive attitude and assistance in upgrades to facilities. The Wheatbelt Development Commission also recognised the importance of motor racing in regional Western Australia and provided financial grants to help the club build new infrastructure. These sorts of contributions should not go without thanks.” said Woodhams.
The WA Street Stock Championship has a history dating back to 1982, and this is the first time the event has ever been held at Moora. Street Stocks traditionally attract the largest number of competitors of all speedway divisions for their Championship events.
The Moora Club last hosted a major WA State Sedan Championship in 1994, when the Junior Sedan Title was contested at the Central Midlands venue.
“I think Moora has really put itself on the speedway map now. As someone who regularly goes to races there I am incredibly proud of everyone associated with the Central Midlands Speedway Association (the Moora Club) and I’m sure that another State Sedan Championship will be allocated to Moora in the next few years.” concluded Woodhams.
