Member for the Agricultural Region, Mia Davies today marked NAIDOC Week by attending the Bundiyarra Family Day celebrations in Geraldton.

Ms Davies said NAIDOC week is important to celebrate and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and achievements.

“NAIDOC week is a great opportunity to celebrate Indigenous culture and recognise the contribution of outstanding Indigenous individuals and groups in our communities,” Ms Davies said.

“This is particularly important in regional WA, where there are strong links to traditional Indigenous culture and thriving contemporary Indigenous groups.

“It was great to attend the Bundiyarra Family Day and enjoy the exceptional performances from the Streeties Performing Arts Academy and Red Ochre.”

Ms Davies congratulated the Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation and everyone involved in putting together this great NAIDOC Week event.

The National theme for the 2011 NAIDOC Week celebrations is ‘Change: the next step is ours’.

Today’s celebrations were part of a week of NAIDOC events in Geraldton, including the 2011 NAIDOC Awards on 1 July, the NAIDOC Sports Challenge on 8 July and the 2011 NAIDOC Ball on 9 July.

Activities take place across the nation during NAIDOC week in the first full week of July.
