About Terry

Terry’s family farming and small business links to the great southern and south west stretch back over generations. He and wife Marie continue to live in Denmark, where Marie also manages their small business. Their daughter Alysha (21) is completing tertiary studies in Perth and son Ben (23) has completed his studies and is working in the family business at Denmark.

Terry began his career in country WA after graduating from the University of Western Australia. Prior to entering politics, he was for nine years the Principal of the WA College of Agriculture Denmark.

First elected to Parliament in 2005 as Member for Stirling, Terry established a reputation as a staunch defender of regional interests, championing improved services and infrastructure for people who live and work in country WA.
At the September 2008 State Election, the electorates of Warren Blackwood and Stirling were, in effect, combined to form the new electorate of Blackwood-Stirling. Terry successfully contested the enlarged seat and believes people embraced the WA Nationals “Royalties for Regions” initiative as a powerful plan for improving funding for country areas. He says it is a privilege to be in Government as part of a strong Nationals team delivering “Royalties for Regions” to country WA.

About the Electorate

Blackwood-Stirling is located in the South West Region and includes the Local Government areas of Boyup Brook, Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Cranbrook, Denmark, Manjimup, Nannup, Plantagenet and part of the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.

Blackwood-Stirling has an impressive and growing tourism and natural resource profile whilst maintaining a very strong focus on primary industry. The electorate is varied in its rainfall and geography and this is reflected in the diversity of its agriculture and industry. Visitors to Blackwood-Stirling are drawn by its rivers, forests, mountains and stunning coastline and by its world class wine and food.

Terry believes one of the challenges facing the increasingly diverse region is that of ensuring traditional and contemporary industries with sometimes contrasting needs are able to co-exist and to thrive. Managing the region’s enormous potential, sustainably and with adequate services also presents significant challenges.

Royalties for Regions is beginning to make a real difference in regional areas and Terry is especially committed to achieving improved infrastructure and services for Blackwood-Stirling. He sees this as a personal challenge in unfavourable financial times but says it is a challenge he is determined to follow through.
