43 homes delivered in Broome and Derby under the West Kimberley Transitional Housing Program
Made possible by $33 million investment through Royalties for Regions
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today officially launched the West Kimberley Transitional Housing Program in Broome.
The program is a partnership between State Government - through the Housing Authority - and the Kimberley Development Commission to deliver a minimum of 40 houses in Broome and 20 in Derby.
Mr Redman said the program provided stable, affordable housing to Aboriginal people in Broome and Derby who were engaged in employment or training, committed to ensuring their children attended school and wanted to move towards being responsible for their own homes.
"The ultimate goal is for participants to move into private rental or purchase their own home," he said.
The project was made possible by a $33 million investment through the Government's Royalties for Regions program. The Government, through the Housing Authority, contributed the land to deliver the 60 new dwellings.
The Minister today met with participants in the program, who will have access to support services to help them reach their goals. These may include referrals to community support networks such as health, education and employment agencies.
A transitional housing program in the East Kimberley has seen school attendance among Kununurra and Halls Creek participant's children reach 99 and 97 per cent respectively.
Housing Minister Colin Holt said the program would provide a vital service to Aboriginal people in the West Kimberley.
"Participants are encouraged to develop independence, improving ownership opportunities and promoting intergenerational change to support a better quality of life," Mr Holt said.
"I am pleased Royalties for Regions is contributing to the development of strong and sustainable communities to support long-term growth in our regions."
