  • Community centre upgrade and expansion completed
  • 70-place childcare facility to meet growing needs of community
  • $6.5 million investment through the Liberal National Government’s Royalties for Regions program

A community celebration will be held in Dampier for the official opening of the Dampier Community Hub.

The vibrant new centre will meet the increasing demand for community services and facilities with a 70-place childcare facility, public library, coffee kiosk, multipurpose meeting rooms and community spaces, and a refurbished community hall.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the facility would provide a reinvigorated central hub for the community.

“The new facility replaces ageing infrastructure to meet the current and future needs of the community,” Mr Redman said.

“Providing high-quality amenities and services is key to creating vibrant communities that make the Pilbara a place people choose to live and raise a family. This project is a key example of how Royalties for Regions funding and industry partnerships have been instrumental in realising the Pilbara Cities vision to build a vibrant region with a strong economy.”

Businesses have also benefited from the construction of the new facility, with 27 local Pilbara businesses engaged during the build, representing 70 per cent of all sub-contractors employed by project builder Pindan Contracting.

The $18 million project was made possible with $6.5 million funding from the Liberal National Government’s Royalties for Regions program, $9.4 million from Rio Tinto, $1 million from Lotterywest and $1.1 million from the City of Karratha.

The Dampier Community Hub is one of more than 100 projects under the Pilbara Cities initiative, delivered by the Pilbara Development Commission, which is making the Pilbara a great place to live and raise a family.

The opening follows the completion of Stage 1 of the project, a major refurbishment of the community hall, which opened in October 2015.
