Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies MLA is encouraging locals to nominate ‘heritage champions’, as part of the State Government's Western Australian Heritage Awards 2017.

The annual State Government awards recognise the outstanding contribution of owners, volunteers, professionals and organisations working to promote and conserve WA's cultural heritage.

Ms Davies said the awards showcased the work being done to revitalise State Registered heritage places, setting standards in interpretation, heritage tourism, conservation and adaptive reuse.

Previous local projects to be recognised with high commendations include the York Post Office, York Residency Museum and the Old York Primary School.

“It’s thanks to the dedication of people involved with local projects like these at York, that our children and grandchildren will continue to enjoy Western Australian heritage for years to come,” she said.

Ms Davies said the awards provided the chance to acknowledge those people that commit their time and skills to preserving local heritage.

“These people and their projects deserve to be acknowledged. Every year, the awards allow us to recognise those dedicated to supporting and enhancing our cultural heritage, locally and throughout the State,” she said.

Through the Heritage Council of Western Australia, the program has grown into WA's premier heritage event. This year marks the 25th year of the awards.
